Zürich 2007

click for large version We gathered August 5-11, 2007 at the Zürich James Joyce Foundation (ZJJF), for the workshop "Cruxes in Ulysses." It was organized and run by Fritz Senn, Ursula Zeller, and Ruth Frehner (Switzerland). There were 17 participants from >7 countries, and occasional onlookers such as Friends of the ZJJF, and members of its Joyce Reading Groups.

Augustinergasse is a small street off the Bahnhofstrasse (to which Joyce dedicated a poem), and takes its name from the nearby St Augustine church. The first floor, a small museum, had a pretty exhibit of flowers in art and literature. The ZJJF occupies the second floor. A pilgrimage site for Joyceans from all over the world, it is run by Fritz Senn, with the help of Ursula Zeller, Ruth Frehner, and Frances Ilmberger (Frances was away during the Workshop). The ZJJF houses more than 5000 volumes, as well as collections of artwork, posters, objects and assorted kitsch related to Joyce.

During the workshop, Amanda (USA), David (Czech Republic), Scarlett (England), Gregory (USA), and Elena (Italy, she arrived the last day) were making use of its resources. Amanda, David, and Scarlett were funded by scholarships from the Friends of the ZJJF. Amanda and David are seen here.

click for large version I will now introduce the people at the 2007 workshop. This is Fritz Senn, guru, grand master and Merlin figure. He ran the workshop with discrete precision, and made everything fall into place. He attended to everyone with extraordinary care, and conjured whatever we needed, be it the projector for a presentation, food for luncheons around the kitchen table, a needed library volume, or a ready supply of chocolate and wine. Fritz takes very expressive photo portraits, and has a file of all Joyceans he has captured; he took many of the photos in this section. Alongside the workshop, he was helping graduate students, and proofreading/indexing an upcoming volume of his memoirs, edited by Christine O'Neill.

click for large version This is Anne Fogarty (Ireland), here with Sam Slote (USA, now Ireland). Anne had just completed a successful run of the Dublin James Joyce Summer School. She is the next President of the International Joyce Foundation.

click for large version This is Gerald O'Flaherty, scholar and gentleman (Ireland). He gave me his umbrella under torrential rain (and refused to take it back). He is a great resource on Irish language and history.

click for large version This is John Gordon (USA). John is interested in the realistic aspect of Ulysses. I am currently reading his 'Joyce and Reality: The Empirical Strikes Back.' He has great insights into Ulysses details; at the workshop, I particularly liked his suggestion that Bloom's egg...Sinbad at the end of Ithaca may have been misheard by Molly's as a request for breakfast in bed!

click for large version This is John Smurthwaite. He is a librarian from Leeds (England). John has a great mastery of the English language and also knows how to find information in books very quickly. He can play the jew's harp. He has a quietly dark sense of humour. In my next life, I want to be a librarian.

click for large version This is Robert Nicholson (Ireland). Robert runs the James Joyce Museum (Sandycove Martello tower) & the Dublin Writers Museum in Dublin. I later realized he was the author of "The Ulysses Guide: Tours Through Joyce's Dublin," a book I faithfully followed in 1992.
