Begin. We gathered August 3-9, 2008 at the Zürich James Joyce Foundation (ZJJF) for the workshop "errears & erroriboose." It was organized by Fritz Senn, with Ruth Frehner and Frances Ilmberger (Switzerland). It was devoted to "the pervasive occurrence of mistakes, fumbles, errors, howlers, and misunderstandings" in Joyce's works. It took its title from FW140.32.

The ZJJF is located #9 Augustinergasse.

Augustinergasse branches off Bahnhofstrasse (to which Joyce dedicated a poem), and takes its name from the nearby St Augustine church. #9 Augustinergasse is an address with mythical resonance, a bit like 221B Baker street or 7 Eccles street.

The first floor houses a small art museum. This photo very much resembles last year's, except for a new exhibit with a deltic blue logo: Blaubart (= Bluebeard) in art and literature.

The ZJJF occupies the second floor. It is run by Fritz Senn, with the help of Ruth Frehner and Frances Ilmberger (they organized and participated in the workshop), as well as Ursula Zeller and Tanja Gubser (they sadly were away). The ZJJF houses more than 5000 volumes, as well as collections of artwork, music, posters, and objects related to Joyce.

Unannounced visitors came in on a regular basis, to ask for a specific reference, a map of Joycean Zürich, or take a look around. The welcome they get is nicely illustrated in a blog entry by Sam Jones (2005): "Four or five years ago, on a whim, I dropped by the Joyce Foundation in Zürich. Senn happened to be in, and he chatted with me for almost an hour, showing me his cabinet of curios (Joyce’s walking stick, a Joyce death mask) and inviting me to stop by later for the Finnegans Wake reading group. Nice guy...fine gentleman." And further: "When I was walking up the stairs to the Foundation’s offices, I ran into one of the staff. I explained that I was an American in town for a visit and wanted to see the Joyce archive while I was there. She asked me how long I was staying in Zürich. When I told her only two days, she said: “You haven’t been to the Mann archive? Well then, go right now! We are open tomorrow but they are not!”.

Many visitors sign the guest book, in itself a collection of artwork with sketches, collages, limericks etc from all over the world.

Walking down the Augustinergasse, the street was decorated with flags for Swiss National Day, August 1st. Swiss National Day was inspired by the mention of 'the beginning of the month of August' (primo incipiente mense Augusto) in the Federal Charter of 1291. It was made an official national holiday in 1994. It is celebrated with citywide parades, bonfires, flags, fireworks, and raclettes on 6th floor balconies.

The "errears & erroriboose" workshop had 25 participants from > 15 countries.
